Not sure if you guys noticed, but Fall is officially here! The leaves are changing, the air is crisp, and the forecast is getting cooler by the minute. Cool weather means it's time to change up our skin care products from oil-free, mattifying, oil-absorbing, etc. to hydrating, moisturizing, nourishing, etc. (no matter your skin type... *hint* oily skin peeps *hints*) One of my holy grail products are perfect to ring in the Autumn weather. This product is a cult favorite for all skin types, genders, age groups and skin conditions. Fun fact, it has been the number 1 selling serum internationally for several years
now. And on a personal note, it has been in my skin care arsenal for about 5 years now. I swear by it! Honestly, my skin is always happy when it is in my rotation. Now, at this point you may be wondering what is this miracle, cult classic serum I am boasting about. Well, wonder no further it is none other than Estee Lauder's Advanced Night Repair serum and today I am going to share an in depth review on this OG skin care product.
Are you ready? Then let's jump straight into!
The History of Advanced Night Repair
In 1982 Estee Lauder spearheaded revolutionary research on the link between DNA damage and accelerated skin aging. They discovered excess sun exposure, pollution, and other environmental factors can cause premature aging. Following that discovery, the company wanted to find a way to not only stop premature aging in its tracks, but possibly repair previously damaged DNA. Armed with conclusive information on this new found skin concern and the determination to find a solution, beauty powerhouse Estee Lauder worked to find a solution; they stumbled upon an ingredient that would not only solve this problem, but would solve so many other skin care problems. That ingredient was hyaluronic acid. And with that discovery the first skin care product to use hyaluronic acid was born.
Estee Lauder didn't stop there over the next 30 years they tested new technologies and conducted countless studies to improve the understanding and delivery of hyaluronic acid. In late 2007, early 2008 the company hit the motherload! They discovered their patented delivery technology called ChronoluxCB. This technology was so revolutionary they patented it until 2033. According to Estee Lauder, ChronoluxCB techonogly helps to re-synchronize the look of skin by optimizing the skin's natural repairing process. Thus, skin cells are better able to perform at their peak. The company also notes that hydration is the key to natural repair, which is why hyaluronic acid is so important.
Since its conception, Advanced Night Repair has changed the face of the beauty industry. In the last 36 years, almost every skin care and beauty brand worldwide use hyaluronic acid in their products. Plastic surgeons now use hyaluronic acid fillers to enhance the lips and other facial features, and health supplements include this ingredient in their joint and muscle care products. What was once a never heard of ingredient now is the hottest beauty trend thanks to Estee Lauder.
What is Hyaluronic Acid?
I won't go too in depth with this because I have an entire Skin Health 101 post the topic. (If you would like to read that post please click here for a direct link. ) In a nutshell, hyaluronic acid is a substance that absorbs water hydrators from the environment around it and binds them to the surface of the molecule. Acting like as humectant. Hyaluronic acid does occur naturally in the human body, but does deteriorate over time. Hyaluronic acid can be used topically or orally. Internally it can help with joint pain and collagen production.
What does Advanced Night Repair claim to do?
According to Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair is suppose to fight key signs of aging. The company goes on to say, "Powerful nighttime renewal for radiant, youthful-looking skin. Instantly adds radiance. Intensely hydrates. " Their studies show 75% of women felt their skin looked more youthful in 4 weeks, 82% felt their skin was immediately hydrated, and 83% felt their skin looked healthier, fresher, more rested in 4 weeks. (This study was performed in store and online in United States Prestige Beauty Departments and Specialty stores. The study was held by an NPD Group in July 2018.)
How should this product be used?
I have been told that this serum is so much more than just the typical serum-- it is a booster. This product can be used as a typical serum, on clean skin before moisturizer, mixed into moisturizer, mixed into other serums, layered over other serums or mixed into foundation. I typically use it alone or over top an exfoliating serum. They recommend 3-5 drops; I personally use 5. It can be used day or night.
Pro and Cons of Advanced Night Repair
My personal thoughts
This is an amazing product. It has always worked well for me. It is so lightweight and gentle I know it is reliable. My skin is always more calm, more hydrated and more plump when I use this product. My skin experiences the least amount of breakouts and the eczema patch near my eye is nonexistent when I use this. Whenever I go back to it I wonder why I ever stopped using it. I love this product. I highly recommend it. If you haven't tried it I would ask you "What are you waiting for?" No, but seriously what are you waiting for?
Two thumbs way up. Amazing work Estee Lauder!

Anyhow, you guys know I love to find inexpensive products that work well; so naturally when I discovered that Trader Joe's offers affordable skin care I had to get my hands on it! Today's blog post topic is going to be a mini haul of Trader Joe's Skin Care; I purchased three things to give there line a try; if all goes well I will definitely purchase more stuff.
The first product I picked up is the Trader Joe's Spa Face Wash with Tea Tree Oil. They don't make too many claims when it comes to benefits of the product. They say it refreshes and rejuvenates the skin. After reading the ingredients I believe the face wash will help control my oil, possibly help with acne, and refine pores. It smells amazing! It has high notes of lavender; I am sure that alone will make it an amazing, calming night time cleanser. The price was great; if I remember correctly it retailed for $5.99 USD.
The next product is the Trader Joe's Nourish Oil Free Antioxidant Facial Moisturizer. Again they don't have specific skin benefit claims. However being the ingredients lover I am I definitely checked the ingredients sections to see what was going on there. I like that it is going to be great for my oil control being that formula is made without oil. It also contains aloe and vitamin e which are great for stressed, dehydrated, and/or sensitive skin types (all of which fit my skin currently.) It has collagen, retinol, vitamin c, tons of other anti-aging ingredients which is amazing because it is hard to find a product with anti-aging properties that is oily skin friendly. It doesn't really have a smell; which makes sense due to the package saying the product is fragrance free. This product retails for $5.99 USD.
The last product I picked up is Trader Joe's Blueberry and Acai Facial Scrub. Now this one does have a few skin benefit claims it claims to "remove dry, dull skin cells and refresh the appearance of your complexion." They say the product does this by coupling the nutrients inside of blueberries and acai berries with alpha-hydroxy acids. The packaging of this product is awesome; it comes in a sturdy frosted glass jar. The product itself smells like blueberry yogurt. The AHAs (alpha-hydroxy acids) it contains are citric, lactic, and malic. I am really excited to use this product. I have high hopes! This product retails for $6.99 USD.
So far I am most excited to try the scrub. I love the smell and the claims as well as the ingredients. The face wash sounds like it will really do wonders for my skin and the moisturizer will probably be great for my distressed, sensitive skin. I am really looking forward to using each product. I am going to do a full review of these products in a few weeks. I want to really put them to the test before hand so, expect a review closer to the middle of December.
I plan to get back to my Friday blog posting schedule. Let's hope I can stick to it!
